Learn button color reference
On Chamberlain-built openers — Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Craftsman all come off the same line — the color of the learn button tells you the generation, and the generation decides which remotes will pair.

Genie and Overhead Door openers use Intellicode and CodeDodger instead, and are identified by a PRGM, PROGRAM or LEARN CODE label rather than a color.
How to program a garage door remote
Identify your opener brand
Read the brand name printed on the motor unit hanging from the garage ceiling. It is often printed on the wall control too. The brand on the door itself is the door manufacturer and is not what you need.
Find the learn button and note its color
On a stepladder, look at the back or side panel of the motor unit, next to the antenna wire. You may need to slide off the light lens cover. The color of that button identifies the generation: yellow is Security+ 2.0 from 2011 onward, purple is Security+ from 1997 to 2011, orange or red is 1993 to 1997, and no button at all means a pre-1993 DIP switch opener.
Press and release the learn button
Press it once and let go. The indicator LED comes on and the opener will accept a new remote for about 30 seconds. Do not hold the button down — holding it for six seconds or more is the command that erases every remote from memory.
Press and hold the remote button
Within that 30-second window, standing near the opener, press and hold the button on the remote you want to pair.
Release when the opener confirms
The opener lights flash, or you hear two clicks, or on Genie units the LED flashes purple and the opener beeps. That is the confirmation. Genie and Overhead Door openers need the remote button pressed two or three times in total.
Test the remote and the auto-reverse safety
Step back and run the door a full cycle from the remote. On Security+ 2.0 openers the first press or two after pairing may do nothing, so press up to three times before assuming it failed. While you are there, lay a 2x4 flat under the door and close it — the door must reverse the instant it touches the wood.

Where is the learn button on my garage door opener?
On the motor unit hanging from the ceiling, on the back or side panel next to the antenna wire. On many Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Craftsman openers you have to slide off the light lens cover to reach it. Genie and Overhead Door units usually label it PRGM, PROGRAM or LEARN CODE and place it beside a round indicator LED.
What does the color of the learn button mean?
On Chamberlain-built openers — which includes LiftMaster and Craftsman — the color tells you the generation. Yellow means Security+ 2.0, made from 2011 onward. Purple means Security+, roughly 1997 to 2011. Orange, red or green means 1993 to 1997. No learn button at all means a pre-1993 fixed-code opener programmed by matching DIP switches. A remote from one generation will not pair with an opener from another.
How long do I have after pressing the learn button?
About 30 seconds. If you do not press the remote button within that window the opener drops out of learn mode and nothing happens. The tool on this page runs a live countdown so you can see the window closing, and lets you restart it.
Why will my new remote not program?
The two most common reasons are a weak battery and a generation mismatch. A remote LED can still light on a battery too weak to transmit, so fit a brand new coin cell first. Then confirm the remote matches your learn button color — a Security+ 2.0 remote will never pair with a purple-button opener. Also make sure you are standing close to the opener and completing the remote step inside the 30-second window.
How do I erase all the remotes from my garage door opener?
Press and hold the learn button for about six seconds on Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Craftsman openers, until the LED goes out. On Genie and Overhead Door units hold the program button for about ten seconds until the LED flashes. This clears every remote and keypad, so you will need to re-program all of them. It is worth doing when you move into a house and do not know who else has a remote.
Will a universal remote work with my opener?
Usually, yes. Most quality universal remotes cover Chamberlain, LiftMaster, Craftsman, Genie, Overhead Door and Linear openers made from 1993 onward. Check that the packaging explicitly lists Security+ 2.0 if you have a yellow learn button — not every version supports it. Pre-1993 DIP switch openers need a matching DIP switch remote instead.
Why does my remote only work close to the garage?
Almost always a battery on the way out — replace it even if the remote still works from a few feet. After that, check that the antenna wire hangs straight down from the opener and has not been cut or tucked into the housing. Cheap LED bulbs in the opener are also a very common cause of short range; swap them for bulbs rated as garage-door-opener safe.
