Why does my garage door go back up when I try to close it?
Nine times out of ten it is the safety sensors near the floor. They have to see each other for the door to close, so anything in the beam — a trash can, a bike tire, even a thick cobweb or salt film on the lens — makes the door reverse. Clean both lenses and check that both indicator lights are steady rather than blinking. If the sensors are fine, the opener’s down-limit or force setting needs adjusting.
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
Three signs together are conclusive: you heard a loud bang like a firecracker, the door is now far too heavy to lift by hand, and there is a visible two to four inch gap in the coil of the spring mounted above the door. A broken spring means the opener is trying to lift the entire weight of the door on its own — stop using it and call a technician. Never attempt a spring replacement yourself.
Why is my garage door so loud?
Grinding or scraping metal usually means worn rollers or failed bearings. Rattling and shaking means the hinge and bracket bolts have worked loose over years of cycling. A single loud pop is a spring. Switching to sealed nylon rollers is the single biggest noise improvement on most doors, and takes about an hour.
Is it safe to use my garage door if it is crooked?
No. A door hanging visibly lower on one side has either a broken lift cable or has come off its track. Running the opener at that point can jam the door hard in the tracks, bend sections, or drop it. Leave it where it is — closed if possible — and get it looked at the same day.
My garage door opener runs but the door does not move. What is wrong?
If the chain or belt moves and the door stays put, the trolley has been disconnected from the door arm — usually because someone pulled the red emergency release. With the door closed, pull the red cord toward the door to re-latch it, or run the opener once and it will usually re-engage. If the motor hums but nothing moves at all, the drive gear inside the opener has most likely stripped.
